Money to Burn

November 24th, 2009 by admin

Modern medicine, whether in the form of prescription drugs or over the counter drugs, can end up costing you a whole lot of dough, even if you happen to have health insurance (which too many people do not have). Visits to the hospital or clinic can end up hitting you hard in the pocketbook, and an extended stay could end up wiping out your entire savings. It is no wonder that many people are no looking into alternative area for their health care needs, especially in today’s trying economic times.

Some  of the most popular alternatives to overpriced modern medicine are home remedies. Many home remedies are readily available in your kitchen or at least cost only a trip to the local supermarket and can provide relief without many of the undesirable side effects that over the counter concoctions have. Many home remedies are passed down from generation to generation with their roots based upon tradition. Other remedies do not necessarily cure the ailment, but rather makes the sufferer feel better. These home base remedies are much cheaper than other types of medicine and they come with very little side effects, and are considered safe to use in conjunction with stronger types of medication.

Many people confuse home remedies with homeopathic cures since both are considered alternative form of medicine. These two types of treatments, however, are not related. Homeopathic treatments work by either triggering a response in the immune system or simply by placebo effect, while home remedies employ plants and herbs from nature to help one recover from sickness or disease.

Chicken Soup

One of the most common home remedies in the world today is a nice hot bowl of chicken soup. Countless people have resorted to this tried and true method to help combat a cold or flu. Recent medical studies now back up this traditional remedy.  They found that chicken soup contains a chemical called neutrophil chomotaxis, which is effective at fighting off infections and inflammation that occur in upper respiratory tract. The protein and the soothing heat probably have something to do with the miraculous healing powers of the soup also. Whatever it is, Grandma was right.

Some more cures

For a yeast infection: A wash made of apple cider vinegar has been used to fight off the fungus that causes this infection.  Yogurt, which is full of fungus fighting bacteria, has also been used in the same manner.  Drinking buttermilk is another good home remedy that people can use.

Acne is another common problem that can be cured with some simple home remedies. A puree of orange peel or cucumber and water applied to the face can help dry the acne up. Raw garlic clove can also be effective, if you do not mind rubbing it on to your skin. Aloe is also good to rub on acne.

Aloe Vera is great to use for a large number of things including dandruff, overall hair heath, wounds, cuts and scars. It even has some internal uses including helping with digestion and regularity. For sclp problems, lime juice is also a good remedy. Constipation can be cured with a large number of different fiber filled foods. Aside from figs and all things bran, people can also enjoy exotics like bale fruit or guava to help clear out their intestines.

Since home remedies utilize natural ingredients, that tend to be safer that other types of medicine with mild side effectives. They are also much less costly than over the counter drugs, providing relief for little or, in some cases, no cost.
